Securing the airway and protecting the lungs from material that shouldn’t reach them is the key benefit of endotracheal intubation when it’s done correctly. The endotracheal tube, with its cuff inflated inside the trachea, creates a seal that isolates the lower airways from the oropharynx and stomach. This prevents secretions, blood, or gastric contents from entering the trachea and lungs, which is especially important in unconscious or compromised patients who can’t protect their airway.
